Moldovan broadcaster TRM has officially announced that Moldova will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

The decision was revealed at a press conference by Moldova 1’s Director, Corneliu Durnescu, and the country’s Head of Delegation, Daniela Crudu.

The withdrawal was explained as being “following a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative and artistic challenges.” Alongside this announcement, Moldova’s national selection process, Etapa Națională, has also been canceled.

Corneliu Durnescu, Director of Moldova 1, addressed the decision, highlighting the challenges faced by the broadcaster:

The decision was not an easy one, but necessary in the current context. This year’s national selection highlighted certain challenges, including a decrease in public interest and the overall quality of the plays and artistic performances. This fact generated a negative perception among specialists and the public, underlining the need for a substantial reform in the selection process.

Durnescu noted that the broadcaster plans to overhaul its selection criteria and methodology to better encourage participation from talented artists and ensure a stronger cultural representation for Moldova on the international stage.

He elaborated further:

We consulted music specialists, and most of them expressed serious reservations about Moldova’s participation this year, in exact agreement with the opinion of the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of professionals and the general public, and we understand that we must make responsible decisions.

The Eurovision Song Contest comes with significant financial commitments. Durnescu revealed that Moldova’s participation fee to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is €21,486, in addition to costs associated with organizing the national final, artist promotion, team travel, stage production, and technical equipment.

Plans for the Future

Despite the disappointment of withdrawing, TRM is optimistic about a future return to Eurovision. Daniela Crudu, Moldova’s Head of Delegation, emphasized the importance of this decision:

This decision was not an easy one, but we assure you that it was analyzed in detail. We know that we would all have liked to organize a national final and designate the song that would represent us on the international stage. However, we are firmly convinced that this decision will boost the interest in participating in future editions. We will ensure that we return to Eurovision with force.

Crudu also expressed a commitment to nurturing talent:

It is important to support people who want to reach big stages and to give them the opportunity to prepare better.

While Moldova steps back from Eurovision 2025, TRM’s leadership has made it clear that this is not a permanent departure. With plans to reform and strengthen their approach, the broadcaster intends to reignite public interest and return to the contest with renewed vigor in future editions.

The decision highlights the ongoing challenges faced by smaller nations in balancing financial constraints and the need for high-quality artistic representation on an international stage.
