Ronela Hajati, born in Tirana, is an Albanian singer, songwriter and dancer. Showing interest in music from a very young age, Ronela studied both ballet and piano during her elementary school years. She continued her early career with participations on various music events at different occasions, such as Top Fest and KĂ«nga Magjike.
Ronela has been noted for being versatile in her music, style and interpretation. She is primarily characterised as a pop artist, although she has been experimenting with different music genres, including R&B and reggae. Ronela has named American musician Michael Jackson as her idol and one of her biggest musical influences. She is also a fan of Puerto Rican musician Ricky Martin.
In 2013 Ronela rose to fame with her smash hit “Mala Gata”. Since then, Hajati has released over 20 singles having the big majority cracked within the top 20 of Albania’s singles chart. She is scheduled to release her first studio album in 2022 that will include some of her most recent songs, also her biggest hits in the country.
Ronela herself is no stranger to standing out and making an impression on the stages of Albania’s most prestigious shows. A large part of Ronela’s success can be attributed to her drive and commitment towards putting herself out there, appearing on a whole lot of festivals, contests and TV talent shows in the past decade. Kënga Magjike, Poleposition, Star Academy Albania, Kerkohet Një Yll and Ethet e Së Premtes Mbrëma are just some of the platforms that Ronela has graced with her star-power presence, and she’s even popped up competing on a series of Dancing With The Stars Albania.
In November 2021 the Albanian broadcaster, Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH), reported that Ronela Hajati with the song Sekret was selected among the 20 contestants to compete in the 60th edition of Festivali i KĂ«ngĂ«s. The song contest is a beloved annual tradition in Albania, and has more recently been used to select the country’s Eurovision entries. At the grand final of Festivali i KĂ«ngĂ«s in December 2021 Ronela triumphed over 19 other competing acts, with some of Albania’s brightest names in pop music amongst the and was announced as Albania’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.
We met Ronela at Eurovision in Concert in Amsterdam in April 2022 and were honoured to take an interview with her.
Her song “Sekret” multi-talented Ronela wrote herself (with production by Marko Polo). The triple-threat Ronela has had her compositions sought after by other artists, too – twice by Albania’s 2021 Eurovision Song Contest representative Anxhela Peristeri, for example. Sekret is one surefire hit that Ronela Hajati was smart enough to save for herself, however.
“Sekret” was performed in the first semi-final of the contest on 10 May 2022, but unfortunately failed to qualify for the final despite being a favourite, finishing in 12th place as Albania’s eighth non-qualification in the contest. The song entered the charts in selected countries after its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, reaching number three in Albania and number 67 in Greece.
