Malaysia has chosen one of its biggest contemporary stars for the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia. Aina Abdul will fly the Malaysian flag in Bangkok on 14 November 2026.
Malaysia has revealed its first-ever representative for the Eurovision Song Contest Asia, with acclaimed singer and songwriter Aina Abdul set to take the stage in Bangkok this November.
The announcement was made on Saturday, 15 August, during the 40th edition of AJL: Anugerah Juara Lagu, one of Malaysia’s most established and prestigious music competitions. Ten artists competed at the spectacular event at Unifi Arena in Kuala Lumpur, but this year the show carried an additional prize: the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia.
Aina Abdul was ultimately selected to take on the challenge and will now become the second artist officially confirmed for the new continental competition.
Aina Abdul: one of Malaysia’s most recognisable voices
Aina Abdul is an established name in the Malaysian music industry, known particularly for her powerful vocals, emotional performances and ambitious visual presentations.
Her success at Anugerah Juara Lagu has played an important role in her career. At AJL 38, her self-written song Jangan Mati Rasa Itu finished third and earned her another Best Vocal award. At AJL 39, she won the Best Performance Award for Puas Sudah.
Her appearance at AJL 40 once again demonstrated why she was considered a strong choice for an international competition. Performing Kamu, Aina delivered a dramatic volcano-inspired staging, emerging from a huge rock formation as red and orange lighting transformed the arena.
The performance also earned her the Best Performance Award at this year’s AJL, alongside the Anugerah IKON Artis Pilihan Shopee award.
Aina is also a songwriter, having written and composed a number of her own successful releases, making her selection particularly interesting for Eurovision fans who are curious to see what kind of musical identity Malaysia will bring to the new competition.
From Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok
Aina’s Eurovision Asia journey will now be documented in a new TV3 programme titled Malaysia Memburu Impian.
The series will follow the singer from her selection through to her participation in Eurovision Song Contest Asia, with episodes set to appear as part of TV3’s Thursday-night programme Melodi.
The song Aina will perform in Bangkok has not yet been revealed. This means that one of the biggest questions surrounding Malaysia’s Eurovision Asia debut remains unanswered: what musical direction will Aina and her team choose for the international stage?
Considering her reputation for combining strong vocals with theatrical staging, expectations are already high.
Malaysia becomes the second confirmed country
Malaysia is the second country to officially reveal its artist for the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia.
On 11 August, Bhutan selected Nyendra as its representative after he won the first edition of Rhythm of Bhutan. He will perform Lhayi Semo in Bangkok.
The inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, on Saturday, 14 November 2026.
The new competition is designed as an Asian counterpart to the Eurovision Song Contest, bringing artists from across the region together for a major international television event. The first edition is expected to feature broadcasters from across Asia-Pacific, with the participating countries selecting their representatives through different national processes.
For Malaysia, however, the decision is already made.
Aina Abdul is going to Bangkok — and she will be carrying Malaysia’s Eurovision Asia debut with her.
Now the question is: what will her Eurovision Asia song sound like?
