Bulgaria’s Black Sea city has been selected to host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest, following DARA’s historic victory in Vienna. The competition will take place on 11, 13 and 15 May 2027.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Bulgarian National Television (BNT) have announced that Burgas will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2027.
The decision brings Eurovision to Bulgaria for the first time after DARA’s historic victory at the 2026 Contest in Vienna, where her song Bangaranga secured Bulgaria’s first-ever Eurovision win.
The 71st Eurovision Song Contest will take place on Tuesday 11 May, Thursday 13 May and Saturday 15 May 2027, with the two Semi-Finals followed by the Grand Final. The shows will be staged at Arena Burgas, Bulgaria’s newest major sports and entertainment venue.
Eurovision heads to the Black Sea
The choice of Burgas represents a departure from the traditional capital-city option. Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, was among the final contenders, but the EBU and BNT ultimately selected the country’s Black Sea coastal city.
Burgas is one of Bulgaria’s major cultural and tourist destinations and offers a very different setting from the recent Eurovision host cities. Rather than bringing the Contest to a national capital, Eurovision 2027 will place the international spotlight on a seaside city known for its coastline, cultural life and summer tourism.
The city’s newest arena, opened in 2023, will become the centre of the Eurovision production. According to the official Eurovision website, Arena Burgas will host the three live shows, while the city will also accommodate a wider programme of Eurovision-related events throughout the week.
A first Eurovision for Bulgaria
Bulgaria joined the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, but it took more than two decades for the country to achieve its first victory.
That moment finally came in Vienna in May 2026, when DARA won the 70th Eurovision Song Contest with Bangaranga. Her victory was particularly significant because it was also BNT’s first win in the competition.
Now, for the first time, Bulgaria will have the opportunity to present Eurovision on home soil.
The EBU described Burgas as a city with a strong cultural identity and the ability to welcome artists, delegations, fans and journalists from around the world. BNT will serve as Host Broadcaster and will work with the EBU on delivering the Contest.
A Eurovision week beyond the arena
The Eurovision experience in 2027 is expected to extend well beyond the three televised shows.
The official Eurovision announcement says that Burgas will host a programme of activities around the Contest, with further details about the Eurovision Village, EuroClub and wider cultural and entertainment programme to be announced in the coming months.
This could give Burgas an opportunity to turn Eurovision into a city-wide cultural event rather than simply a television production.
That approach has become increasingly important for modern Eurovision host cities. Recent editions have demonstrated how the Contest can transform an entire city for several weeks, creating fan spaces, concerts, cultural programmes and opportunities for local businesses and tourism.
For Burgas, with its established identity as a seaside destination, Eurovision week could also offer a particularly distinctive atmosphere.
The road to Burgas begins now
The announcement marks the beginning of a busy period for BNT and the city of Burgas. The coming months will bring further decisions about the Eurovision Village, EuroClub, accreditation, ticketing, participating broadcasters and the detailed programme surrounding the Contest.
Burgas will now become the centre of the Eurovision world in May 2027 – giving Bulgaria its first opportunity not only to host the competition, but to present its own cultural identity to a global audience.
After 70 years of Eurovision history, the Contest is heading to the Black Sea for the first time.
And in May 2027, the Eurovision family will meet in Burgas.
