A major reform could be coming to Italy’s iconic Sanremo Music Festival, as music labels are reportedly promoting the idea of introducing a dedicated Eurovision-focused evening within the competition.
According to reports from Italian outlet Dagospia, the festival’s traditional Covers Night could be transformed into a special Eurovision showcase as early as 2027. Under the proposed format, artists would present performances specifically designed for the Eurovision Song Contest, allowing broadcasters, industry professionals, and viewers to evaluate which combination of song, artist, and staging would work best on the European stage.
The proposed Eurovision-focused evening would reportedly remain separate from the official Sanremo competition results. Supporters of the idea believe this could create an alternative path to Eurovision for artists who aspire to represent Italy without necessarily winning the festival itself.
Italian media have also speculated that only artists willing to represent Italy at Eurovision would participate in such a showcase. Some reports suggest that songs could even be performed in shortened three-minute versions to better reflect Eurovision rules and allow audiences to see the potential final product.
However, the proposal has already sparked debate among music critics. Many point out that Italy has consistently achieved strong Eurovision results through the current Sanremo system, raising questions about whether such a reform is needed at all.
Financial considerations may also play a role in any potential changes, as Eurovision-style staging concepts, dancers, and large-scale visual productions would require additional investment. At this stage, no official plans or rule changes for Sanremo 2027 have been confirmed by RAI.
