Albania decided their tenth-ever entry for Junior Eurovision through their Junior Fest Albania. It’s a wonder why they don’t call it the Festival I Kenges Junior. Eighteen finalists were decided out of the many who sought to represent. All eighteen finalists were given an original song to perform. In the end, the winner decided was Nikol Çabeli with the song “Vallëzoj”
It’s quite unusual to hear a Junior Eurovision song that sounds like blues music. “Vallëzoj” means Dance. The song’s lyrics have an environment message to it. The overall message is about protecting nature with a special focus on flowers. I find it interesting that they mix environmentalism with a blues-sounding song. Nikol’s vocals start off sounding ‘cutesy’ but the power of her voice develops over time and she does a great job with the song.
JESC Chances: Albania is easy to underestimate because of their past results. With the exception of fifth in 2015, we’ve all seen their low finishes over the years. Their eighth-place finish last year is a reminder not to underestimate them. These past two contests, the juries have been very good to Albania and ranked them in the top half. If this song has the right staging and Nikol’s vocals are on, I can see this getting another Top 10 finish. I might see this being set back with online voting as Albania doesn’t normally finish high in the popular vote. Nevertheless, things could change in Madrid.
