Austria’s song for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest has officially been released! JJ, the countertenor selected to represent Austria in Basel this May, will perform Wasted Love—a dramatic fusion of pop and classical influences.

The song, co-written by JJ himself alongside Thomas Turner and Teodora Špirić (better known as Teya from Austria’s 2023 entry), was unveiled alongside its music video, now available on the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel.

A Song of Heartache and Hope

JJ has shared that Wasted Love is deeply personal, capturing the pain of unrequited love:

This song perfectly captures my experience with unreciprocated love. There’s a unique kind of heartbreak in having so much love to give but nowhere for it to land. It feels like being adrift at sea on a fragile paper boat; grasping at any sliver of hope, only to watch it dissolve beneath you. And yet, there’s something undeniably beautiful in that naïve devotion. Because, in the end, simply being able to love – no matter how wasted – is a beautiful thing in itself.

The music video visually portrays these emotions, leaving viewers in suspense about what JJ has planned for his Eurovision performance in May.

ORF’s Programme Director, Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz, expressed her pride in Austria’s choice:

We have an extraordinary song and an extraordinary artist this year. JJ is an exceptional talent and a highly sympathetic and highly professional young man who will definitely stand out at the Song Contest.
With “Wasted Love” we manage to bring a completely different style to the stage again this year. I would like to thank the entire team for this – first and foremost our scouts Eberhard Forcher and Peter Schreiber.“We have an extraordinary song and an extraordinary artist this year. JJ is an exceptional talent and a highly sympathetic and highly professional young man who will definitely stand out at the Song Contest.”

Who is JJ?

Lyrics “Wasted Love” by JJ

I’m an ocean of love
And you’re scared of water
You don’t want to go under
So you let me go under
I reach out my hand
But you watch me grow distant
Drift out to the sea
And far away in an instant

You left me in the deep end
I’m drowning in my feelings
How do you not see that?

Now that you’re gone
All I have is wasted love
This wasted love
Now that you’re gone
Can’t fill my heart with wasted love
This wasted love

When you let me go
I barely stayed afloat
I’m floating all alone
Still I’m holding on to hope

Now that you’re gone
All I have is wasted love
This wasted love
Now that you’re gone
Can’t fill my heart with wasted love
This wasted love

Wasted love
This wasted love
(Wasted, wasted, wasted…)
Wаѕted love
