Diljá won the final of Söngvakeppnin 2023 tonight and will represent Iceland at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool with the song “Power”

Iceland’s national selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest, Söngvakeppnin 2023, culminated tonight in a live final held at Söngvakeppnishöllinni in Gufunes.

The Icelandic National Broadcasting  RÚV has revealed that the voting records for the event were shattered, with just under 260,000 votes cast during the final of Söngvakeppnin 2023, the highest number of votes cast ever in the Icelandic selection process. Viewers at home were able to vote up to 40 times for the act they wanted to see represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

Söngvakeppnin 2023 is a three-show contest consisting of two semi-finals and a final. All songs in the semi-finals were required to be performed in Icelandic, but in the final, artists had the option to perform their songs in the language they intend to use if selected for Eurovision.

The semi-finals took place on February 18 and 25, while the final was held today March 4. Hosting duties for all three shows were shared by Unnsteinn Manuel Stefánsson, Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir, and Sigurður Þorri Gunnarsson.

Diljá emerged as the winner after two rounds of voting, which saw a seven-member international jury panel and the Icelandic public have their say. And now Diljá will represent Iceland on the big stage n Liverpool in May with her song “Power”, which she co-wrote with Pálmi Ragnar Ásgeirsson. Pálmi was also one of the writers of the Icelandic Eurovision entry from 2015, “Unbroken”.

In the first round of voting both – a seven-member international jury panel and the Icelandic public decided the outcome and two acts went to the superfinal, where the results were decided 100% by public voting.
