Nice 2023 will mark the first-ever appearance of Estonia and the first appearance of a Baltic entry in twelve years. Estonia sends Arhanna Arbma, winner of the nations’s TV talent show Star Stage, as their entry. Shortly after her selection, her video where she does a cover of “Bridges” by Alika got a lot of attention. Alika and Arhanna have teamed up together on social media videos since.
Now for the song. Just like “Bridges,” it also starts on a delicate piano opening and builds over the course of the song. This is a song about friendship and being one to turn to during the most difficult times. Arhanna’s vocal start softly and get more powerful over time. The instrumentation also grows more powerful as the song progresses. This is a song I really like.
JESC Chances: Debut nations are a mixed bag. Some get big results in their first Contest while others gets lackluster results. I know there are a lot of ballads this year but this is one of the stronger ones. Arhanna has a great song for the Contest. I feel she can do very well for the jury part provided she has great staging to go with it. I’m tempted to think they should bring back Alika’s player piano. For popular vote, it may not do as well as ballads don’t always get big votes and Estonia is a small nation. Nevertheless Junior Eurovision has often delivered surprising results. Anything can happen in Nice.
