Austria has chosen its contender for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest, and it’s a name that is already making waves in the world of classical music. JJ, a 23-year-old Austrian-Filipino countertenor, will take to the Eurovision stage in Basel this May, promising a performance that blends timeless artistry with modern energy.
A Unique Talent on the Eurovision Stage

With a voice that reaches remarkable soprano heights, JJ has been hailed as an extraordinary talent in both the classical and pop worlds. His selection has been met with excitement, with ORF’s Programme Director, Stefanie Groiss Horowitz, praising his distinctive artistry:

JJ is an exceptional talent! With him, we are sending a unique artist to Basel who brings his own magic to the Eurovision Song Contest stage, with captivating pop and classical singing.

JJ’s musical journey has already seen him perform at the Vienna State Opera, with roles in productions such as Die Zauberflöte and Von der Liebe Tod. He is also a student at the Music and Art Private University of Vienna (MUK), where he studies under the renowned soprano and professor Linda Watson.

From Starmania to the Eurovision Stage

Born in Vienna in 2001, JJ spent part of his childhood in Dubai before returning to Austria in 2016. He first gained national recognition in 2021 as a finalist on Starmania, ORF’s popular talent show, where his vocal abilities left a lasting impression on audiences. Now, he is ready to take his talent to the international stage.

Before Eurovision, fans will have a chance to see JJ perform on ORF 2 on Friday, 7 February at 21:00 CET, in a broadcast of Die Zauberflöte from the Vienna State Opera. His Eurovision entry, the song he will perform in Basel, is set to be unveiled in early March.

Austria’s Search for the Perfect Act

Austria’s journey to selecting its Eurovision 2025 representative began in mid-2024, with a nationwide search for both artists and songs. For the first time, ORF hosted a dedicated songwriting camp, bringing together composers and performers to craft the perfect entry.

A panel of 30 national and international music experts, alongside representatives from Eurovision fan clubs across five countries, helped select the final act. Their choice was clear—JJ stood out as the artist to bring something truly unique to the Eurovision stage.

With a blend of classical mastery and contemporary appeal, JJ now carries Austria’s hopes to Basel, aiming to leave a lasting impression at the world’s biggest song contest.
