Jon's Song ranking Junior Eurovision 2023Jon's Song ranking Junior Eurovision 2023

Can you believe it? We’re getting closer and closer to Junior Eurovision 2023. Glad to see it back in France. Besides Paris 2021 is still my favorite Contest. I don’t know if it was because it looked like it was in a palace instead of an arena or because it had a Christmas-like feel to it, but it’s still my favorite. Sixteen nations will be competing in Nice. Germany returns and Estonia will be competing for the first time. The performers have already had their first rehearsals and we’ve had a chance to get sneak peeks of them. One thing that’s commonly talked about is that six songs are favored to win. You’ll notice it in my Top 6.

Before I give my Top 10, I’ll just let you know how I do it. Even after I finish my reviewing of songs, I listen to them on my own for enjoyment. When I do my lists, quality of the song supersedes likes. I’m just that kind of person that would rank a song that’s better quality a higher ranking than my favorite ‘earworms.’ Also since the whole running order was decided so fast, I did my last listen of all entries in their running order. Sometimes running order makes a difference in one’s own choices as well as the end results of the Contest. Also I watched very little of the rehearsals because I want everything to be a surprise on the day of the Contest.

So without further ado, here are my personal Top 10 songs of this year’s Junior Eurovision:

1. ARMENIA 🇦🇲 – My favorite is my No. 2 song. I ranked this first because this is the most jam-packed song with a catchy beat and loaded with attitude.

2. SPAIN 🇪🇸 – This is for me the catchiest song of the Contest. If it seems too cutesy, Sandra makes up for it by delivering in style and professionalism. She may have what it takes to be the first-ever first-up performer to finish in the Top 3.

3. NETHERLANDS 🇳🇱 – Did I originally see it as a song about a break-iup? Overall it’s song that’s catchy from the very minute you first hear it. Both the melody of the song and Sep and Jasmijn’s chemistry as performers make this song go far.

4. FRANCE 🇫🇷 – France does something different this time but like their previous Junior Eurovision entries, it stands out. It has a good message, catchy beat and an infectious melody. Also Thimeo Garin will be there dancing in his fourth JESC!

5. NORTH MACEDONIA 🇲🇰 – You’ll notice this year’s entries are more ballads than upbeat songs. This is the best of the ballads. The melody of the song, Tamara’s passionate vocals and the theme of heroes makes it stand out.

6. UNITED KINGDOM 🇬🇧 –  These three girls also deliver an attitude-packed catchy song. The music, singing and the best make it very easy to like.

7. ESTONIA 🇪🇪 – Their first-ever JESC entry and they send a ballad that stands out from most of the ballads in this year’s Contest. Great vocals and dramatic music are it’s highlights.

8. GERMANY 🇩🇪 – There are times when you don’t have to overdo things to impress. This song’s positive message is it’s best quality. I think this can deliver Germany’s best-ever JESC result.

9. UKRAINE 🇺🇦 – I think it’s because I’m Ukrainian Canadian about why I like it. An anti-war song like last year. This time around, it’s a song that sends a message of hope. Anastasia’s singing and performance adds a feel of child-like innocence and optimism.

10. GEORGIA 🇬🇪 – Another hero song for this year. The vocals of the three as well as the powerful lyrics and the theme of heroes make the song great and worth liking.

And there you have it. That’s my Top 10 of this year’s Junior Eurovision entries before the show. The Contest on Sunday can change all that. Like last year, “Senorita” was my top pick before the Contest and “DANCE!” was my top pick of the Contest. We’ll see what Sunday has in store!
