For Armenia to select its seventeenth entry into Junior Eurovision, AMPTV announced they would do an internal selection where they would invite young artists that were interested to enter before late-July, requesting their submissions be covers of two songs. It took two months and two rounds of auditions for the jury panel to decide the representative for Armenia. On September 28th, it was decided to be Leo Mrktchyan who comes from a family of singers. Then came the waiting game for the song. By October 16th, exactly one month before the Contest, Armenia was the only nation that had not yet revealed its Junior Eurovision song! Heck, Leo even had a 10th birthday on October 12th and we still didn’t know! Leo’s song “Cosmic Friend” was finally released October 22nd.
This is a song in both Armenian and English and its about his secret friend from another planet. Despite their differences, despite the far distance between them, he feels great being with him. The song sounds like a mix of 70’s disco and modern techno-dance. Leo’s singing is great for the most part but his diction of English needs improvement in some areas. It has a catchy dance beat, but I’ve heard better entries from Armenia in the past few years. Despite Leo being very professional here, he does come across as being too cutesy in this song.
JESC Chances:
Two wins and ten Top 3 finishes for Armenia. It’s not just the numbers that make it amazing but the types of acts that achieved those results from male solo to female solo to duo to vocal group to even a band. Armenia has a male solo singer as one of its winners but the last time a male solo singer from Armenia finished in the Top 3 was in 2015. There are a lot of people that will find this song catchy but there are also people who, like me, find this song too cutesy. Also I noticed Armenia finished out of the Top 3 in online voting in the last two JESCs. A low jury voting finish can hurt their chances for another Top 3 finish. Staging will definitely make or break its chances to rank high.
