Cyprus participated in the very first Junior Eurovision in 2003 but their participation has been on-again, off-again with some lengthy breaks. 2009 marked the start of a five-year break and their last-place finish in 2017 started a seven-year break that ends this very year. Bringing Cyprus back to the JESC stage is 11 year-old Maria Pissarides. A native of Cyprus who currently attends a performing arts school in the UK. Her song “Crystal Waters” is co-written by Cyprus’ 2014 entry Sophia Patsalides.
The song is about the natural beauty of the beaches of Cyprus. She sings of the sunshine, the golden sand and especially the clear waters. This song doesn’t have Maria do a lot of showing off in her singing. She keeps her vocals mostly calm throughout this song. It works fine here because all she needs is her smooth singing voice. The song also has a mix of light techno music, Latin rhythms and Arabic beats. Actually the best quality of the song is that it doesn’t try too hard to get one to like it. It offers a lot as it is.
NOTE: It’s interesting how when us Eurofans compile a list of Eurovision Summer Anthems every summer, most of us neglect the Junior Eurovision songs. I feel this is one Junior Eurovision entry that can be a future summer anthem. If only we didn’t have to wait eight months!
JESC Chances: I can understand why Cyprus is on-again, off-again in its JESC participations. Their finishes are nothing to brag about and their two eighth-place finishes from 2004 and 2006 are their highest ever. This song has a lot of buzz as it ranks in the Top 5 on ‘My Eurovision Scorecard’ and consistently ranks high on many a Youtuber’s list. Listing to this song, I feel it has excellent chances of achieving Cyprus’ best-ever Junior Eurovision finish. The thing is it will need the right staging to make it happen. Any bad staging choices could cause it to finish lower than it should.
