For choosing their ninth-ever Junior Eurovision participant, Portugal went a route common among many nations and chose their winner of The Voice Kids for this year: Victoria Nicole. Victoria was born in Venezuela and came to Portugal with her family in 2018. The song “Esperança” is a song in which she receives both writing credits for music and lyrics.
FACT: Only three Junior Eurovision entries have writing credits on their songs this year. Cyprus’ Maria Pissarides, Spain’s Chloe de la Rosa and Victoria.
The title “Esperança” means hope and this song has both Portuguese and Spanish lyrics. This song is a ballad of how she dreams of making it in music and is determined to make it come true, despite the big obstacles. Every Contest, we see a lot of ballads. One thing I’ve learned from past ESC and JESC Contests is that if you want to make a ballad go far and even win, it must have something incredible. Just ask Slimane, Barbara Pravi, Duncan Laurence or even her own countryman Salvador Sobral! What makes this ballad stand out are the heartfelt lyrics and the incredible vocals of Victoria. You can even sense the heart and soul in her singing and you won’t believe that a 13-year-old wrote this song!
This has the potential to be the first ballad to win Junior Eurovision since 2017!
JESC Chances: Portugal’s best finish ever in their eight previous appearances is eighth in 2022 and is also their only Top 10 finish. I consider this song to be the first JESC entry from Portugal that sounds like it wants to win it! No doubt it will definitely get Portugal’s highest finish ever. It’s also attracted a lot of winner buzz as it’s topping a lot of YouTuber’s lists of favorites and at press time, it’s second only to Ukraine at ‘My Eurovision App’ appearing to overtake it anytime soon! Ballads have won the JESC before but there’s the fact that a ballad has never won the online voting since its start in 2017 and the last ballad to get a Top 3 finish in online votes was in 2021. I can see this has excellent Top 3 chances. As for the win, it depends if the younger voters who normally favor more upbeat songs are willing to make a ballad a winner.
