San Marino right now is the European microstate with the most Eurovision ambition. Despite low finishes, they keep on searching for the right act to represent at Eurovision each year. They even want to be part of Junior Eurovision from time to time. This year is their fourth participation and a return to the Contest since their last entry in 2015. The network SMRTV did an internal selection for their entry and decided on a four-girl group names Idols SM. The group consists of four girls between 11 to 12 and citizens of San Marino. Their names are Asia, Giulia, Giorgia and Vera.
FACT: Junior Eurovision rules state that entries must be citizens of the nation they represent or have lived in that country for at least two years. In past years, the EBU has given San Marino special permissions in the past to enter children of either Sammarinese or Italian nationality. In 2015, they gave special permission for Russian singer Kamilla Ismailova to compete as she visited San Marino in her childhood.
The song “Come Noi” was written by three members of Miodio: San Marino’s first-ever Eurovision entry back in 2008. The title means ‘like us.’ The song is about their friendship and how it’s one-of-a-kind and how their friendship for each other fly high together. The lyrics are inspiring and the instrumentation in the song is good. The vocals are lackluster. They do a good job in singing their song in both their own bits and in unison, but the singing is mostly boring and hardly anything challenging. I don’t think the four of them are as well trained as the other contestants.
JESC Chances: No matter how low San Marino finishes, San Marino is the one microstate that won’t be kept down. Even at Junior Eurovision, they will enter them in despite their highest finish ever being tenth in their debut year of 2013. If a nation as small as San Marino is to get anywhere at Junior Eurovision, especially with online voters, they will have to deliver something that can win over both crowds and juries. I’ve seen catchier entries representing San Marino during that time from 2013 to 2015. I’m hoping for the best for them but I’m very doubtful.
