Many of us who like Junior Eurovision are happy to see Croatia back after 11 years. Possibly because Croatia won the very first Junior Eurovision. This year makes it only the sixth time Croatia has participated in Junior Eurovision and their first in eleven years. Bringing Croatia back to JESC is nine-year old Marino Vrgoc from the small Dalmatian coastal town of Ploce. Marino won the very first contest of The Voice Kids Croatia. His song is titled “Snovi” which means dreams. The song is about how dreams create hope and can make anything possible. The song starts soft and then grows in energy over time. It has a mystical feeling to it. Marino’s voice and his image of young innocence fits the song well. Thing is in a year full of ballads, this one gives you the feeling something is missing after hearing so many JESC ballads. Does it lack vocal range? Intensity? Different accompanying music?
JESC Chances:
I’ve often said showbiz is one of the few occupations where it’s possible to start at the top and work your way down. Croatia won the very first Junior Eurovision back in 2003, finished third in 2004, had modest finishes in 2005, 2006, left, then returned in 2014 only to finish dead last. With this song being a ballad, it faces rivalry in Tbilisi against ballads that deliver a lot more in terms of vocals or music. Marino is a gifted singer but I’ve seen videos of him singing where he gives a better demonstration of his singing abilities. Marino does a good job in adding the element of innocence to the song but it’s a matter if viewers will like the song during the Contest or dismiss it as a ‘boring ballad.’ The right staging can also make or break the performance in Tbilisi.
