Junior Eurovision has always had solo singers as the most entries each Contest but this year is the first year since 2020 that only a single entry isn’t a solo singer. Cyprus is the only nation to enter an act with more than one singer. For Cyprus’ eleventh Junior Eurovision entry, CyBC television selected the duo of 14-year old Rafaella Panteli and 12-year old Christos Georgiou. Rafaella has a big background in musical theatre and Christos is skilled in singing, playing drums, dancing and song writing. Their song is titled “AWAY.” This year’s JESC features a lot of songs about ambitions and dreaming for the future. This duet is about the two dreaming and chasing their goals together. This song has orchestrated music for the melody. Listening to it, I wonder if it’s trying to mimic a Broadway melody or a circus song. It just sounds like it. The vocals from the two singers are great, the message of the song is very good, but the music doesn’t sound so fitting.
JESC Chances:
The best Cyprus has done in its ten previous participations is eighth. Last year’s song had a lot of buzz and could make a great ‘Eurovision Summer Anthem’ but the staging and performance wasn’t all there and finished out of the Top 10. Right now, things don’t look so good here. It’s very possible the song can be polished up and the performance can get its staging done well so that it does get a good position at Junior Eurovision. By the looks of things, I don’t think they will surpass the eighth place. Not while there are songs this Contest with catchier music and even Broadway-sounding songs that sound more polished.
