Italy is back again for Junior Eurovision. This year, RAI internally selected 11-year old Leonardo Giovannangeli from Rome to represent. Leonardo is a finalist from The Voice Kids: Italy and is also talented in dancing and acting. His song “Rockstar” is of his musical dreams of being a huge superstar and how he’s not afraid to pursue it, despite the cruel obstacles that may lay ahead. I find it intriguing that the song is called “Rockstar” but it’s more of a pop/dance type of song. I think the reference to “Rockstar” is about the rock star fearlessness while he appears to depict pop stars as those most focused on pleasing others. As for the song itself, this song is full of energy and has a catchy beat to it. The song and Leonardo’s vocals have a lot of energy in it and I find it likeable. One thing I don’t like is the overuse of autotune in the song. I just wonder how much autotune in microphones will they allow at JESC?
JESC Chances:
Italy won on its first attempt in 2014 and has only had one other Top 3 finish. Just because I find this song likeable doesn’t mean others will. I can see a lot of people who get tired of all the ballad entries liking a song like this, but this Contest has other high energy songs. Right now, the song doesn’t rank too high on a lot of people’s lists. Could it be they see Leonardo’s confidence as cockiness? Only time will tell. The rank of this song could change. Many times, I’ve seen JESC songs that ranked low in fanfare get a great result because of how the Junior Eurovision performance went. That’s what Leonardo will need for his song to finish higher than expected. He will need staging that will match the high energy of the song if it’s to finish well.
