Eliza Borg will be singing for Malta at Junior Eurovision 2025Photo: PBS

So how about that? This is my last song review for JESC 2025! Reviewing Junior Eurovision songs is not as difficult as doing reviews of Eurovision songs. You’ve seen my blog reviews of Eurovision songs where I have many song reviews in a single blog, right? With Junior Eurovision song reviews, I can keep it to a blog of just a single song reviewed. Doing a review every two days is nice and steady.

Hard to believe that Junior Eurovision is less than two weeks away. I still don’t know who the interval act will be! Also I was surprised to see that this year, the Contest will start at 8am my time on Saturday! Last year, it was 9am. Whatever the situation, I have no problem. I’m looking forward to it.

Interesting how the last song with a video is first-up this year. Here is my last review blog! My Top 10 list I hope to have done by Thursday.

MALTA

Song: I Believe

Artist: Eliza Borg

Malta is one of only seven nations from the very first Junior Eurovision in 2003 that’s competing here in Tbilisi. Malta is also one of the most loyal nations at the JESC; absent from only two previous Contests. For this year, PBS decided to have The Voice Kids Malta to decide the singer to represent. The winner was decided as twelve-year old Eliza Borg. Eliza has been actively singing since she was two years old competing in many contests and she’s also a great dancer. Her song is titled “I Believe.” The song is about her dreaming of her goals and ambitions. The song begins on a sweet note and then develops into something you think you’d normally hear in a Disney musical. This may be Junior Eurovision but I think this song is still too sweet for the competition. No doubt in my mind Eliza has excellent vocals but this competition has stronger ballads that do a better job. I’m skeptical about this.

NOTE: There was a lot of controversy surrounding the music video for this song. Mostly because it’s all AI and not a single scene of Eliza singing. Adding to the controversy is Armenia having a video that’s either animation or AI. I myself am not happy about Malta’s AI video. Eliza herself has commented that the video is AI, but has neither criticized or defended the video. We’ll have to see over time. The AI video only makes me want to see Eliza sing in Tbilisi so that the justice will be done.

JESC Chances:

Malta has had mixed results at Junior Eurovision in the past. They have won twice before and have finished in the Top 10 many times, but they’ve had some low finishes too. I know these past two Contests, Malta has submitted a ballad that had low expectations at first. I haven’t forgotten both those ballads finished in the Top 10 with last year’s even getting Top 3 in online voting points. Nevertheless, I’m skeptical about this year’s entry. Eliza is under more pressure than necessary. Besides trying to get a good finish from Malta, she has people questioning what her performance will be after seeing the AI video, and even the added pressure of being first-up in the Contest. Running order positions can affect the Contest and starting the Contest off with an overly sweet ballad could hurt its chances for a good finish. We’ll have to see. Another good finish will depend on Eliza’s performance in Tbilisi.

Lyrics of I Believe

Late in the night when the world’s asleep
She lies awake wondering
Thinking about who she could be
And for a second she can hardly breathe

The thoughts in her head
They scare her sometimes
It rumbles like thunder
She’ll search for the light
But she can’t seem to get them off her mind
Then the words they change
She sees flashing lights
And all of her dreams
They come to life
Now she no longer wants to hide

Wish this moment lasts forever
Take a picture to remember
To believe
To believe
Written in the stars forever
Frozen like a cold December
So I believe
I believe
And I don’t want
No I don’t want
I don’t want this moment to end

Then the words they change
I see flashing lights
And all of my dreams
They come to life
Now I no longer want to hide

Wish this moment lasts forever
Take a picture to remember
To believe
To believe
Written in the stars forever
Frozen like a cold december
So I believe
I believe
And I don’t want
No I don’t want
I don’t want this moment to end

And there you have it! That’s my last review of the songs of Junior Eurovision 2025. My Top 10 list before the Contest is coming soon!
