Kazakhstan may be one step closer to joining the Eurovision Song Contest, following discussions held at the recent European Broadcasting Union (EBU) General Assembly in London. Kemelbek Oishybayev, Chairman of the Board at Khabar Agency — Kazakhstan’s EBU associate member — revealed that the topic of the country’s potential debut was formally raised with the union’s leadership.
The Assembly, hosted at the BBC headquarters, brought together Europe’s major broadcasters to discuss the future of television in the age of artificial intelligence, audience trust, and digital content distribution. As part of the gathering, Oishybayev met with EBU Director-General Noel Curran to explore Kazakhstan’s Eurovision prospects.
“With EBU Director-General Noel Curran, we discussed Kazakhstan’s participation in the contest. The arguments included geography, our participation in Junior Eurovision, and strengthening ties with the EU. Curran noted that the issue will be brought up at the next EBU meeting,” Oishybayev stated.
