Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has officially confirmed that The Netherlands will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, which will be held in Switzerland. This decision comes after months of discussions and negotiations with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding structural changes to the event. The broadcaster received assurances that substantial improvements will be made, ensuring a safer and more artist-friendly environment at the contest.

Joost Klein Declines Eurovision 2025 Offer

Dutch rapper Joost Klein, who was offered the opportunity to represent The Netherlands again in Eurovision 2025, has decided to decline the invitation and posted the statement on his Instagram account. With his decision, AVROTROS has now opened submissions for new songs to represent the country in Basel.

Structural Changes at Eurovision

AVROTROS, along with other participating countries, pushed for significant behind-the-scenes reforms at Eurovision during and immediately after the 2024 edition in Malmö. These concerns centered on safety, privacy, and governance at the event. The EBU has responded with a comprehensive package of reforms, which include:

Appointment of a Safety Manager: A dedicated safety manager will be responsible for the artist environment, ensuring a secure space for participants.

Reduction of Backstage Filming: There will be a significant reduction in behind-the-scenes filming to allow artists more privacy.

Creation of a ‘Safe Space’: A special area backstage will be designated for artists where they can relax without being disturbed.

Establishment of a Crisis Team: A crisis management team consisting of representatives from the EBU, participating countries, and the host broadcaster will be set up to make major decisions democratically.

New Eurovision Director: Martin Green has been appointed as the new Eurovision director, tasked with overseeing the implementation of these changes.

AVROTROS has expressed satisfaction with these reforms and is optimistic about the future of Eurovision, describing the changes as a step in the right direction. While the broadcaster will continue to monitor the implementation closely, it remains hopeful that these updates will enhance the experience for artists and ensure a fairer and safer environment at the contest.

Submissions Now Open

With Joost Klein’s decision not to compete, AVROTROS has opened submissions for the Dutch entry for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest. Artists, songwriters, producers, and record labels are invited to submit their original and distinctive songs for consideration. Submissions are open from now until Friday, November 22, at 23:59 CET, and entries can be sent to songfestival@avrotros.nl. More information about the submission process and requirements can be found on the AVROTROS website.
