Many people thought Estonia would not return to Junior Eurovision after finishing second-last in their first JESC last year. I myself thought Arhanna’s fifteenth-place finish was undeserved. Instead, the head of Estonia’s channel ERR was convinced last year’s performer Arhanna opened the door for young performers in Estonia. Not only would they return in 2024, but there would be a talent show named Tähtede lava (Star Stage) to find the right talent to represent. The winner was decided as far back as May 5th when the second final decided Annabelle Ats as Estonia’s representative in Madrid. In October, it was decided her song would be “Tänavad.”
The title “Tänavad” is Estonian for ‘the streets.’ The song, sung completely in Estonian, is about street culture, its influence on youth culture and how its creativity won’t be stopped despite the attitudes of contempt from the adult powers that be. Even the video shows off street culture in its influence on dancing, clothes, attitude and recreation. The song itself starts off slowly and then the energy grows as the song progresses with the dance beats. The trance beats in the chorus add to the song’s theme and song’s energy. The many beats and tempos of the song blend excellently for this song. Annabelle herself displays a good range of singing ability without having to overdo it. Her singing fits the vibe of the song well. This song is one of the more mature entries into this year’s Contest. With Ats to turn fourteen in December, this song fits her age well.
JESC Chances: It’s obvious Estonia wanted to send something very different to Junior Eurovision this year. No doubt in my mind this will finish way higher than fifteenth. The ‘My Eurovision Scorecard’ app has it currently in the Top 3. Many Youtubers rank this song high on their list too. The song gives lots to like. I hate to get on the subject of staging but as Eurofans know, staging can make or break an entry on Contest night. I can see this getting a Top 10 or Top 5 ranking if they bring back the breakdancers from the video or have something with the street theme.
